{"id":9672,"date":"2016-06-02T15:36:40","date_gmt":"2016-06-02T14:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/?p=9672"},"modified":"2022-08-30T15:56:01","modified_gmt":"2022-08-30T14:56:01","slug":"british-masters-weightlifting-the-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/british-masters-weightlifting-the-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"British Masters Weightlifting: The Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our very own coach &amp; athlete, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/jessica-johns-green-eating-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jess Johns-Green<\/a>, recently caught up with two British Masters Weightlifting hopefuls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intro<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Right around the corner from BULK POWDERS\u2122 HQ, is the training ground of two newcomers to British Masters Weightlifting who are taking the Masters division by storm.\u00a0 Andrew Kearton and Wayne Elphinstone each brought home gold medals from the national competition at few months ago in Lilleshall Sports Centre.\u00a0 Kearton and Elphinstone both lift with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RobbMcgearyOlympicLifting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Essex Weightlifting Club<\/a> and I stopped by to speak to them about training, nutrition and competing past the age of 35.<\/p>\n<h2>The Interview<\/h2>\n<h3>Q &#8211; What was it like to win gold at the British Masters Weightlifting?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:<\/strong> It was unbelievable!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew:<\/strong> \u00a0It\u2019s been an eye opener.\u00a0 I think I have good chance in the World\u2019s in October.<\/p>\n<h3>Q &#8211; Have you always been involved in lifting and sports?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:<\/strong> I started some weightlifting in CrossFit about 3 or 4 years ago but weightlifting more seriously with Darren Hotten and Essex Weightlifting about 2 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have a background in martial arts and powerlifting.<\/p>\n<h3>Q &#8211; What advice would you give to others who might want to get more involved in competitive weightlifting, especially at a masters level?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:\u00a0<\/strong> The earlier you can start the better!\u00a0 And work on flexibility and coordination, then strength will come.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you want to lift, find a good lifting club and stretch, a lot!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/andy-essex-weightlifting-club.jpg\" alt=\"Andy Essex Weightlifting Club\" width=\"720\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/andy-essex-weightlifting-club.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/andy-essex-weightlifting-club-533x304.jpg 533w, https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/andy-essex-weightlifting-club-640x365.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/andy-essex-weightlifting-club-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q &#8211; What are the challenges that masters athletes (35 years and older) face that younger lifters might not have to contend with?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I would say, try not to focus on that, but also train responsibly and don\u2019t injure yourself.\u00a0 And also, flexibility.\u00a0 Don\u2019t over think, don\u2019t over train, be patient and focus on mobility.\u00a0 Strength really comes to the old men, but flexibility we have to work on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew:\u00a0<\/strong> The more you have going on in your life, the harder it is to get in the 8 hours of sleep \u2013 which I don\u2019t get with 2 children \u2013 and get in the right food.\u00a0 So it\u2019s harder than for a single person in their 20\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h3>Q &#8211; What is your average training week like?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:\u00a0<\/strong> It\u2019s not ideal as masters, we have full time jobs.\u00a0 We have to balance our training with work.\u00a0 I train about 5 days a week and aim for one day on, one day off.\u00a0 3-4 days are on a program with my coach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am fortunate that I have a good deal of flexibility because of my martial arts background, and I\u2019m married to a yoga instructor.\u00a0 I train 4 days a week, and that\u2019 enough for me.\u00a0 I need more rest days and fish oils.\u00a0 Some might think it\u2019s excessive, \u00a0but I squat 4 times week and regularly do my big powerflifts \u2013 deadlift, squat and bench.<\/p>\n<h3>Q &#8211; Numbers on the bar? What are your current PB&#8217;s?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:\u00a0<\/strong> Clean &amp; Jerk is 125kg and Snatch is 100kg.<br \/>\n<strong>Andrew:<\/strong> Snatch 95kg and Clean &amp; Jerk 112.5kg.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bulk.com\/uk\/the-core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/wayne-essex-weightlifting-club.jpg\" alt=\"Wayne Essex Weightlifting Club\" width=\"720\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q &#8211; What about you weight class?\u00a0 And do you have to do anything nutrition-wise to hit your weight class?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:<\/strong> I wanted to be in 77kg weight class, but when you\u2019re training really heavy it\u2019s really hard to get down into that weight.\u00a0 So I decided to go up a class, and I made a choice to train the way I want to compete.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really change my eating habits a great deal and now just stick to a routine.\u00a0 I generally eat a more high fat and low carbohydrate diet, and the day before the competition I will eat what I would normally eat.\u00a0 That way when I go into a competition, I know I can perform because my body is used to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew:\u00a0<\/strong> I compete at under 69kg, and usually I hover around 70kg.\u00a0 It would be too difficult to move up a weight class right now.\u00a0 I was too far under for this competition, which was a mistake, but a learning experience to pay attention to my weight more closely.\u00a0 To make my weight, I lower my carbs before the competition and a few days before I limit my water.\u00a0 I just lay off beer for a bit!<\/p>\n<h3>Q &#8211; What does your normal daily diet look like?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:<\/strong>\u00a0 I use a very basic <a href=\"..\/..\/protein.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">protein powder<\/a> from BULK POWDERS\u2122 along with yoghurt.\u00a0 For lunch, I often eat leftovers from the night before, which includes protein and fat.\u00a0 In the evening, I will focus more on complex carbohydrates and protein, and less fat.\u00a0 I might have another serving of protein powder before bed with some nut butter, or something.\u00a0 As far as supplements, I use the <a href=\"..\/..\/complete-multivitamin-complex-powder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BULK POWDERS\u2122 multivitamin powder<\/a> and their <a href=\"..\/..\/super-strength-omega-3-softgels.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Omega 3<\/a> for recovery.\u00a0 I try not to over supplement.\u00a0 I don\u2019t cheat much because it cheats you back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m not a very clean eater because I have to cook what my family will eat.\u00a0 But I eat as much veg and protein as I can.\u00a0 I use <a href=\"..\/..\/health-wellbeing\/fish-oils.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fish oils <\/a>for my joints and <a href=\"..\/..\/sports-nutrition\/amino-acids.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amino acids<\/a>, a lot of BULK POWDERS\u2122 stuff.\u00a0 <a href=\"..\/..\/dextrose.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dextrose<\/a> after a workout and <a href=\"..\/..\/organic-virgin-coconut-oil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coconut oil<\/a> in my coffee.<\/p>\n<h3>Q &#8211; What\u2019s next for you guys?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Wayne:\u00a0<\/strong> I have another 3 years in this age class and if I can continue and get stronger, it will be the chance to hopefully win some medals in the World\u2019s.<br \/>\n<strong>Andrew:\u00a0<\/strong> The World\u2019s are next.
